Sue’s Summer 2015 Letter

Dear Friends of B.R.A.I.N.,

When Friends of Brain Injury (F.B.I.) took the summer break for July and August, I could not have imagined how busy B.R.A.I.N. would be throughout the summer. Six social events out in the community led by our terrific volunteers kept our survivors busy and having fun, if they wanted to participate. Thank you, Amanda, Christina and Allison!   Sue_newsletter

July 25th was our one day informational seminar called “Homecoming.” A team of home healthcare support led by Angela Mandas helped some families with their own personal journey of bringing their loved one home from the hospital or rest home. We at B.R.A.I.N. understand the difficult decisions that families must weigh as they consider next steps for their brain-injured loved one. When do I bring them home? How do I manage schedules of care? Where do I find financial guidance? Who should I contact for home construction renovation? Thank you, Debbie Edwards for your valuable resources you shared. Thank you Lila Bascom from ComeForcare Home Care Services. Thank you, Ben Morey from Morey Construction. And last but certainly not least, Thank you, Angela and Joan for putting this great event together to help our community.

We took a trip to Paris!

We took a trip to Paris!

I took some time in August to be with my husband, Jerry as he was working on a project in Cambridge, England. We spent some time for a much needed rest and yet often spoke and dreamed about the future of B.R.A.I.N. during those two weeks. Coming home and jet lagged just a touch made me appreciate all the more the volunteers who planned and set up our annual B.R.A.I.N. Picnic on August 22nd. The food was delicious, we all enjoyed seeing one another, and even the weather cooperated and gave us a breeze. The hit was Mai and Garrett (both B.R.A.I.N. volunteers) who served yummy frozen gourmet treats from Garrett’s popsicle business, Solid State! Our survivors were served for free, yet they insisted on tipping Mai and Garrett for their efforts. I was stunned when they would NOT accept the money and gave it all back to B.R.A.I.N. What a family we have. Our first FBI on Sept 8 will be sponsored by Mai and Garrett. You guys rock!

We were given the opportunity to speak and share about B.R.A.I.N. to the Orange County Bar Association. Judge James Gray, Superior Court Judge (Ret) along with Elizabeth Kurtz, Esq. accompanied Jana and me as we presented the importance of B.R.A.I.N. in the legal community. We answered questions and guided all of them to seek out the best of the best in diagnosis and treatment for their clients. We offered to help in any way we are able.

A full day of strategic planning for the future of B.R.A.I.N., which included planning for FBI, therapy opportunities and even our annual Fundraiser that is a Golf Classic September 21st was discussed and moved forward.

I personally want to thank each volunteer, staff member, therapist and of course our donors who allow me to lead such a remarkable organization. Dr. Art Laos is chairman of our Board and it is an honor to work with him and the other board members to assist in guiding this organization to help so many in the community, our neighborhood and our country. I am trusting in God’s leading to help us with future next steps. Stay tuned as the Fall opens up more opportunities.

Onward and Forward!
