Letter from Angela April 2014

As I sit down to write this letter to you, my heart is bursting with joy! We have joy in our hearts every day at B.R.A.I.N. because things happen here. For example, survivors are participating in a reading and writing class as recipients of the Baker Family foundation scholarship. Other survivors are receiving individual therapy after being told they would not talk, eat or lift their arms again. 20 survivors attended Think Tank due to the Baker Family foundation.

Are you smiling yet?

This month, we celebrated small steps and giant leaps. At F.B.I. we highlighted two young women who both had serious brain injuries when they were young. Melissa Yu suffered her first brain injury at age 14 from endocarditis; she is now 22 and is attending a community college along with Monse Rodriguez who suffered an arteriovenous malformation at the age of 20. These two young women are surviving and thriving.

We were joyful to have two nationally known physicians speak at F.B.I. on the areas of sleep and video gaming addition. Dr. Yi Jin, from The Brain Treatment Center in Newport Beach spoke about the brain’s need for sleep and the need for early morning sunlight. He suggested we alter our sleep patterns to help regulate our body’s need for more energy. Dr. Andrew Doan spoke about the newest addiction craze of video gaming. He spoke about the damage it causes in relationships, health, weight, and employment. A person with a brain injury has a higher chance of becoming addicted to the thrill of gaming due to the fact that they have limited activities, and gaming is easy for entertainment.

Whew, if you haven’t attended F.B.I., please come on by Tuesday’s from 5-7 p.m. You will be encouraged to change your life, make friends, become joyful and most importantly, make a difference.

So, smile, go ahead and try it out,

Angela Mandas, MA CCC-SLP
