Angela’s January 2015 Letter

Dear Friends,

As we have completed the month of January with purchasing of gym memberships, classes enrolled, walks taken, blocks run and calories burned, it is reflective of what we do when we commit to something we want to choose to do. For the month of January at F.B.I., we focused our learning on Brain Rule #1: Exercise. As you know it is easier to sit in front of the TV than to get on the floor and hold a plank for 10 seconds! Life is like that too. We choose to do certain activities because they are easier and we don’t have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone. However, we learned each week that, in addition to our body, we need to exercise our mind and our soul too. We challenged ourselves by combining words to form poetry. Who knew that a group of adults can creatively choose words to produce something as beautiful as poetry?

Beautiful daily phenomena such as butterflies, streams of water, a baby babbling, the smell of onions roasting on a skillet (Ah, my mouth is watering) are special moments to be enjoyed. We are grateful for the joy that our weekly meetings produce. We are thankful for the little moments in which brain injury survivors are learning to read, understanding the content of the weekly curriculum, and smiling when they remember their new friends’ names. Our weekly meetings carry me on a high hours after F.B.I. has ended. People come from near and far to feel this energy and joy. Won’t you stop in on a Tuesday night and find out what this feeling is like?

With a joy in my heart,

  1. Angela,
Your words are inspiring as I am struggling with my new reality in life that my husband’s brain injury has created a new reality for me. Still trying to balance full-time job and caregiving; hopefully, I can work something out so that we can join you on a Tuesday evening.
Thank you for your positive thoughts.
